Not The Dinner Day 2024
Not the Dinner Day is one of the most popular events in the SRCY calendar, and one of my personal favourites. The usual format of peal ringing and curry eating is a hit with members around the country. This year was no different with six peals being scored in a variety of methods and a significant amount of Indian food being consumed in both London and the North East. A special mention here must go to the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ band for getting into the spirit of Not the Dinner Day and organising their own concurrent event.
My own ‘NTDD 2024’ experience began very early in the morning in Glasgow. I had spent the week working in Scotland and was due to fly to London in time to conduct an attempt on the ten idiosyncratic bells of St Dunstan and All Saints Stepney. If successful, our peal would mark the 200th anniversary of a peal at the same tower by the ‘Junior Cumberland Society’, so the pressure was on. Fortunately, we scored in fine style and retired to the Crosse Keys to meet other members and swap stories of the day’s ringing. Following the pub, the Bangalore Express was again the London curry venue and they continued their annual tradition of combining plenty of delicious food with glacial beer delivery!
Many thanks to Penny Sharpe for negotiating another excellent deal with the restaurant, and thanks and congratulations to all of the members who took part.
