Peal Weekend Report 2017

Peal Weekend was a successful and enjoyable occasion for the Society and thanks are offered to all those who organised peal attempts, to all who participated, to the conductors and to those who travelled to ring, in some cases considerable distances. The record journey was probably that by Alan Regin, from Newcastle upon Tyne to Wimborne, Dorset!

The statistics are that 45 peal attempts were arranged. Of those, 29 peals were scored, there were 15 failures and there was one cancellation the previous day when it was found that the attempt would have coincided with a concert in the church. An attempt to arrange a further peal failed because the band could not be completed, and when the organiser spoke to me he had already made 22 phone calls to try to complete the band. Such is the enthusiasm we have and we are grateful for it.

There were 240 participants in total, with 36 conductors; Ian Fielding called three peals to be leading conductor. Claire Roulstone took part in six attempts, four of them successful, and conducted one, Cambridge Surprise Maximus at Reading.

Alan Regin and Richard Hobbs took part in five attempts, whilst Janet Menhinick, Felicity Warwick, Anne Rueff, Ruth Curtis and Paul Curtis took part in four. Some seventeen members each participated in three attempts.

Whilst I hesitate to highlight methods rung, knowing that in some areas complex peals are not possible to achieve, there were three attempts of Bristol Surprise Maximus, two of them successful, a peal of 4-Spliced Surprise Maximus at St Magnus, London, three out of four successful peals of Bristol Surprise Major, 10-spliced Surprise Major at Chelsfield and ‘Horton’s Four’ Surprise Major at St Dunstan’s, London.

When I initiated the first Peal Weekend, based in London, about 1980, little did I think that it would come to play such a large part in the Society’s calendar and make it possible for so many members, and especially so many provincial members, to join in a Society activity! Thank you everyone!

Organisers and conductors might like to circulate this to the members of their bands, and indeed to other Society members in their area.

Now for 2018. Peal Weekend will be over the weekend of 17 – 18 November. Please put it in your diaries now! The last meeting prior to Peal Weekend at which it will be possible to nominate new members will be on Saturday 6 October in London. One calendar month’s notice is required for this.
