July Country Meeting 2008

Norwich, Norfolk

This years July Country Meeting saw over 100 Cumberland members descend on Norwich.

Held on Saturday afternoon was the inaugural inter-SRCY striking competition at St. Peter's Mancroft. Five teams entered this 'friendly' challenge with the Midlands team coming out victorious after producing some quality ringing on difficult bells, with hardly any prior practice. The meeting in The Chantry ran without hiccup although started late as the Master was desperate to ring some maximus on the Mancroft bells beforehand! As well as updates about progress at St. Martins and the Ringing Roadshow amongst other things, three new members were elected; Jonathan Adkins from Gloucestershire, Kristine Fowler from the USA and Sally Walker from Derbyshire.

The evening social took place at Hethersett village hall where a fantastic evening was had with 'The Stedman Stompers'. Great food, beer and dancing were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. This version of the ever popular barn dance gave everyone more opportunity than ever to socialise with the people present. Highlights of the evening included the comments about the striking competition by ASCY member David Brown and Claire Roulstone really getting into the swing of things during the dancing.

On Sunday a good number of people completed a tour of 5 towers: St Peter's Mancroft, St. Giles, St. George Colegate, St. Michael Coslany and All Saints..

Overall, the Norwich country meeting was on of the most successful yet. All credit for the success of the weekend must go to everyone involved in its organisation. Bring on the March Country Meeting!
