July Country Meeting 2010

Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire

The Society's country meeting in July 2010 was based in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, around the weekend of 10th July.

The weekend began in the now traditional way with peals on the Thursday and Friday organised by Derek Sibson. There was a 100% success rate on the Thursday, but sadly three attempts were lost on the Friday, one due to a mechanical failure. This early finish for some on the Friday afternoon meant more time to enjoy the hospitality at the Stable Tavern, where many members gathered in the evening for food and liquid refreshment.

On the Saturday morning 44 members took part in five peal attempts coordinated by the Master. All of these were successful, giving an overall tally of 17 peals scored out of 20 attempts over the weekend. Those who preferred not to ring peals enjoyed general ringing at 3 towers on the Saturday morning, before being joined by many of the peal ringers at Ludlow in the afternoon for general ringing on this excellent 10.

At the business meeting in Cleobury Mortimer we remembered Ken Newman, who had been both Junior and Senior Steward of the Society in the 1960's. We also welcomed eight new members from around the UK and around the world.

The meeting was followed by general ringing at Cleobury Mortimer for those who wished, or a visit to the pub for those who didn't! We then returned to the parish hall to find it transformed and ready for over 100 members and friends to sit down to an excellent meal provided by Heather and her helpers. Following dinner the tables were cleared for the barn dance which went on late into the night, interrupted only for the presentation of a 30th birthday cake and card to the Master.

Thanks for a fantastic weekend must go to Heather and Chris Kippin, and to Jo Dorling.
